Day Five
Warnemünde, Germany

Sadly, the map above sums up Day Five very well. The bad weather followed us from Helsingborg to our next port of call. Again we were awoken by an announcement from the bridge that we would be unable to dock due to high winds. Because Warnemünde is a sea port, there is no safe or efficient way to use tenders to take passengers ashore. The Rotterdam dropped anchor just off Warnemünde at 6:15am and sat there until noon. When it became clear that the weather was not going to cooperate, the captain lifted the anchor and we sat sail for Sweden. Our plan for Warnemünde was a train ride to Berlin and a tour of that city.

The cancelled stop was not only a disappointment to the passengers, but it had ramifications for the ship and crew. While we go ashore and have fun, the crew works to dispose of waste and take on supplies. With no call in Germany, everything from the fresh flowers to the food for the meals was sent on ahead to Stockholm.

Because of the change in schedule, this became our second formal night. I watched Mom, Dad and Rory dance the night away in the Crow's Nest, but in keeping with the general malaise of the day, the pictures were horrible!
